Extending our mission to feed those who are struggling the most

Updated: Jun 25, 2020

Furloughed Foodies was founded to support those struggling the most during the COVID-19 pandemic. We mobilized quickly at the start of the crisis to relieve pressure for those who were struggling during the pandemic and respond to an immediate need. Initially, this meant cooking and delivering food to NHS workers who had limited access to healthy and nutritious meals. Since starting, we have delivered over 16,000 meals across London!

Now, following conversations with doctors, nurses and our volunteers, we understand that the pressure on the NHS is easing and workers are seeing a return to normal. Nonetheless, the impact of the crisis on other members of society continues to be catastrophic.

New data from The Food Foundation shows that almost 5 million adults in the UK are experiencing food insecurity during lockdown: a further 1.7 million children live in these households. Furthermore, The Trussell Trust, the UK’s biggest food bank network, said it gave out 89% more food parcels in April, compared to the same month last year, while the Independent Food Aid Network recorded a 175% increase over the same period. In addition, more than 14,500 rough sleepers are likely to return to the streets as Government funding for the “Everyone In” scheme runs out, further deepening the need for food support.

As a pop-up non profit founded to support those struggling during this crisis, we are now turning our attention to those who continue to feel the socioeconomic and health impacts of COVID-19. We are proud to announce that we will now be focusing our services on providing meals to homeless shelters and those experiencing food insecurity. However, we can’t do this without your continued support.

We are run entirely by volunteers, food is cooked in our home kitchens and delivered to a designated contact in each location to ensure safety and to reduce any waste. Each meal is capped at £1.50 per portion, and we always ensure meals are healthy, delicious, and easy to eat.

It is our ambition to deliver 50,000 meals over the next three months to the homeless and the food insecure. To achieve this we have set a new funding target of £75,000. We are calling upon businesses and the general public to dig deep and help us achieve our new goal.
